The Rules

The kiss must be continuous and the lips must be touching at all times.
If the lips part - the couple are immediately disqualified.
Contestants must be over the age of consent in the country the event is being held.
The couple must be awake at all times.
The contestants must stand during the attempt and cannot be propped together by any aids, such as pillows, cushions or people.
No rest breaks are allowed.
Incontinance pads or adult nappies/diapers are not allowed.
Couples must not leave the venue during their attempt.

In 1999 it was reported that Neli van der Hoeven (Netherlands) and Wanderley Coasta e Silva (Spain) kissed for 34:11 hrs, but this record was not verified.

Most simultaneous kissing world record set by Hungarians

[June 10] BUDAPEST, Hungary--Hungarians broke the world record for simultaneous kissing on Saturday when more than 6,400 couples joined lips for a few seconds at a party outside the country's parliament, the organizers said.

Hungary has been engaged in a kissing duel with the Philippines since 2004, when 5,327 couples kissed in Manila, followed by new records in Budapest in 2005 and 6,124 couples in Manila again this February.

'The news came a few months ago that Filipinos had overtaken us, we became defiant and said we would take it back again,' journalist Ferenc Pallagi who organised the Kissing Party, told Reuters.

One young couple who identified themselves as Orsi and Pityu started kissing during the rock concert half an hour before the official record attempt.

'That's the least we can do for the nation,' Pityu said.

Pallagi said he was pleased the square in front of the ornate parliament building by the river of Danube was the scene of such peaceful emotions. The square had been cordoned off for months after being the scene of protests against the government.

'It is early summer...and how else could these young people express themselves than through their love and emotions,' he said before the couples in white baseball caps kissed and the concert resumed.

The Youngest Winner of Miss Universe

Gladys Zender Meier (born Gladys Rosa Zender Urbina on October 19, 1939), is a Peruvian who, as Miss Peru in 1957, became the first Latin American to win the Miss Universe title.

She was born to a Swiss father and a Peruvian mother.

Miss Universe

After she was crowned at the pageant held in Long Beach, California, United States, it was revealed that she was only 17-years' old, a few months under the pageant's minimum-age requirement. Pageant officials decided that she could keep the crown because in Peru a person is considered one-year older if they are more than six months past their birthday. Incidentally, that same year U.S. contestant Leona Gage was disqualified from the Miss Universe pageant (and also lost her Miss USA crown) after it was revealed during the pageant that she was a married mother of two children; Miss Argentina, Mónica Lamas, replaced Gage in the semi-finals.

Zender became an instant celebrity.

* She flew on the inaugural flight from Idlewild International Airport in New York City, New York, to Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru, where she was greeted by thousands of fans.

World's Strongest Earthquakes

On May 22, 1960, the earthquake that struck Valdivia Chile had a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale. This is the strongest earthquake ever recorded by instruments in the world. On the previous day, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck the city of Concepción which is north of Valdivia.

The second strongest earthquake in the world occurred on December 26 2004 and had a magnitude of 9.3. The epicenter was on the ocean floor near the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia and caused a deadly tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

The third strongest earthquake occurred on Good Friday, March 27, 1964 in Alaska, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2 struck Prince William Sound and caused extensive damage in Anchorage.

Cause of the 1960 Great Chilean Earthquake

There is a subduction zone where the Chile Ridge oceanic plate is slipping under the South American plate. This was a thrust earthquake because the Chilean Ridge plate moved downward. The epicenter was on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 100 miles off the coast of Chile.

City and Towns Affected by the 1960 Chilean Earthquake

The coastal area of Chile was worst hit from the city of Concepcion spreading southward to Isla Chiloe.

Near the city of Valdivia, several landslides near Tralcan Mountain blocked the outflow of Riñihue Lake. In addition, 18 people were killed and homes were destroyed. The landslides created new challenges which caused immediate action to reinforce dams in the Seven Lakes chain. In the end, the courses of major rivers were changed forever and new lakes were created.

At Valparaiso, many buildings collapsed. Extensive damage was done to the industrial city of Concepcion.

The coastal city of Peurto Montt sunk downward and causing the ocean water to rush in.

The Tsunami Caused by the 1960 Chilean Earthquake

The damage caused by the Tsunami far exceeded the destruction resulting from the earthquake itself. The wall of water spread across the Pacific reaching Hawaii, the Philippines, and even Japan.

Within 10 to 15 minutes after the earthquake, the tsunami waves struck the coast of Chile. Waves of approximately 25 meters high (1 meter = 3.28 feet) smashed the coastline and traveled inland for almost half a mile.

In particular, the south end of Isla Chiloe suffered the worst damage because it was closest to the epicenter. Approximately 200 people were killed in that area alone.

Approximately 15 hours later, the tsunami reached the Hawaiian Islands. There was not much damage to most areas except for the city of Hilo on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Ten meter waves wiped out the waterfront and 61 people were killed.

Tsunami waves of similar size hit Japan were 138 people were killed and the Philippines where 32 deaths were reported.

Approximately 130,000 homes and buildings were destroyed.
There were 2 million people displaced.
The death toll was estimated at 2,000 and 3,000 people injured. (Some sources say as high as 6,000 people killed)
Total loss and damage to property was approximately $500 million (1960 valuation)

Since 1960, there have been two earthquakes registering around 8 on the Richter scale. Chile will continue to experience earthquakes because of the subduction activity the South American Plate.

Youngest mother to give birth to healthy baby

Lina Medina, 5 years and 8 months old

Pictured to here, in 1940, is Lina Medina, her baby, and the doctor who delivered the baby. Her son was 11 months old in this photograph.

Born at full term at Lima's maternity clinic, her child was taken through a caesarian operation done by Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu.

Her son, weighing 2,700 grams or 5.92 pounds, was well formed and in good health. Child and mother were able to leave the clinic after only a few days.

As a result of a disorder known as precocious puberty, Lina Medina, born September 27, 1933 in the small Peruvian village of Paurange, was 5 years 8 months old when she gave birth by cesarean section to her son on May 14, 1939 (Mother's Day of that year).

The boy weighed 5 lbs and 9 ozs.

Lina is believed to be the youngest girl in the world to give birth to a healthy, full term baby.

Doctors found that Lina had a menstrual period at the young age of 8 months old.

The reason for this disorder is not known. As it's not everyday a 5 year old girl gets pregnant, research on the disorder is hard. Dr. Gerardo Lozada the doctor who delivered her son was astonished.

When asked who the father was, Lina did not give an answer. Many believed her father had molested her and got her pregnant. He was arrested, but because of lack of evidence, the case was dropped.

When her son, Gerardo (named after the doctor who delivered him), was 10 years old he discovered something quite shocking: the girl he believed to be his 15 year old sister was actually his mother.

Gerardo died at the age of 40 in 1979 from bone marrow disease. There is no evidence of the disease having anything to do with the fact that his mother had been so young when she had him.

Lina got married to Raúl Jurado in 1972 and had a second child 33 years after she gave birth to Gerardo. To this day the father of Gerardo is a mystery. Lina's second son currently lives in Mexico.

A book, written by obstetrician Joseph Sandoval in 2002, who had been interested in her case, brought fresh attention to Medina’s story, and raised the prospect that the Peruvian government may belatedly offer her financial and other assistance. “The government condemned them to live in poverty back in 1939.

Extreme degrees of precocious puberty in children under 5 are very uncommon but not unheard of. Pregnancy and delivery by a child this young remains extremely rare because extremely precocious puberty is treated to suppress fertility, preserve growth potential, and reduce the social consequences of full sexual development in childhood.

Three years ago, Bill Landau wanted to retire, and who could blame him? He was in his early 70s and had been a lawyer since Eisenhower was in office.

One thing held him back. His father, Reuben, the senior partner in Landau & Landau, was closing in on 100 and practicing law every day.

" 'Dad, let's retire,' I tell him," Bill Landau said in a 2004 interview with The New York Times. "But he says, 'What would I doooooo?' Just like that. 'Doooooo.' How do you say no to a 100-year-old man? You can't."

Reuben Landau couldn't say no to work and was still reviewing documents a few hours a day in his Cambridge house until he became ill less than three weeks ago. At the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged in Roslindale, where he died Friday, he answered questions with comparative ease until his final moments, his son said.

Mr. Landau, who was 103, has often been called the oldest practicing lawyer in Massachusetts, and he probably was. State legal associations contacted yesterday did not have records to establish the distinction, but each said that the anecdotal evidence favored a man who had practiced law for 81 years.

Because Mr. Landau had been seriously ill only once before in his life, when he had a heart attack at 59, he had hoped to return home from the rehabilitation center, his son said. In a way, that heart attack may have contributed to Mr. Landau's longevity. He kept working afterward, but changed his life in many ways. He quit smoking, changed his diet, and walked each morning from his home off Harvard Square to his office in downtown Boston.

"I decided to slow down in my work and to avoid confrontation and tension and begin an exercise program," he told the Globe in 2002. In a separate interview last year, he added, "I followed all the rules."

Mr. Landau was born in Cambridge, the oldest of eight children in a family that moved to Chelsea when he was growing up. Finishing high school in three years, "he entered Tufts College at the tender age of 15 in September 1919," his son said.

As the oldest son, however, Mr. Landau had to help support his family and left Tufts after a year. He spent three years working as a piece worker making sheepskin collars, then went to the Boston University School of Law. Mr. Landau graduated in 1926, partway through Calvin Coolidge's presidency.

Six of the eight Landau siblings became lawyers and the other two "called themselves black sheep," he told Bostonia, Boston University's alumni quarterly, in 2005.

"The seventh one was a psychiatrist, and the eighth was an accountant," said his son, who lives in Brookline. "Since that generation, there are six more Landau lawyers, of which I am one."

Three generations of the family have attended BU's law school, which gave its top honor, the Silver Shingle, to seven Landaus in 1986 in recognition of their distinguished service to the school.

Last year, Mr. Landau attended the law school's commencement ceremony, eight decades after his own graduation.

"I am pleased to be here on my 80th reunion from the Boston University School of Law," said Mr. Landau, who was honored for lifetime achievement. "Indeed, my contemporaries would agree that, at this point, we are pleased to be anywhere."

He was 102 that day and walked to the podium without the assistance of a cane. Among the other things he didn't need were hearing aids and glasses, though at work he sometimes kept a pair sitting atop his bald head.

"I only wear them to keep the dust out of my eyes," he said in an interview conducted four years ago for the Perfect Balance Yoga website.

With a law practice focused on estates, estate planning, and trusts, Mr. Landau worked in a few different downtown Boston locations for more than 75 years before moving his work into his home about four years ago.

While in law school in the mid-1920s, a friend had introduced Mr. Landau to his sister, Frances Binstock. They married in 1929. His wife died in 1980.

Although longevity runs in his family, no one was as long-lived as Mr. Landau. His mother lived to 100, and three siblings made it into their 90s.

Mr. Landau, who went by his nickname, Ruby, did not view his advanced age as an accomplishment worth boasting about.

"I don't take any pride in my age," he told The New York Times in 2004. "What did I do? To be proud of it, I'd have to be able to attribute it to something I did."

Nevertheless, he enthusiastically took part in BU's New England Centenarian Study, appearing on news programs and CNN.

"He was kind of our celebrity," said Dr. Thomas Perls, director of the study. "As the oldest living practicing lawyer and just being so sharp and such a sage, he was great for reporters and for promoting this notion of healthy aging. It was always such a pleasure to go visit him, and it was remarkable how incredibly sharp he was until the end of his life. The study is so indebted to his family."

In addition to his son, Mr. Landau leaves a grandson.

Taal Volcano, a 406-meter-high crater, is said to be the world's smallest volcano. It is described as "a crater within an island within a lake" because it stands as an island at Taal Lake. The lake was formed after the volcano, which used to be much larger, collapsed. The ridges around Tagaytay City, which overlooks the lake, are believed to be part of the crater of the old volcano. The Mandrill

The Mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) is a primate of the Cercopithecidae (Old-world monkeys) family, closely related to the baboons and even more closely to the Drill. Both the Mandrill and the Drill were once classified as baboons in genus Papio, but recent research has determined that they should be separated into their own genus, Mandrillus. The Mandrill is the world's largest species of monkey. The word mandrill means "man-ape" according to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The Mandrill is recognized by its olive-colored fur and the colorful face and rump of males, a coloration that grows stronger with sexual maturity; females have duller colors. This coloration becomes more pronounced as the monkey becomes excited and is likely to be an example of sexual selection. The coloration on the rump is thought to enhance visibility in the thick vegetation of the rainforest and aids in group movement.

Males average 55-60 lbs (25-30 kg), females about half as much (11.5-13.6 kg or 25-30 lbs). Unusually large males can weigh 110 lbs (50 kg). The average male is 81 cm (32 in) and the female is 56 cm (22 in), with the tail adding another 5-8 cm (2-3 in). They can survive up to 31 years in captivity. Females reach sexual maturity at about 3.5 years.

The Mandrill is found in the tropical rainforests of southern Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and Congo. Its distribution is bounded by the Sanaga River to the north and the Ogooué and Ivindo rivers to the east. Recent research suggests that mandrill populations north and south of the Ogooué river are so genetically different as to be separate subspecies.

Henry Allingham

Guinness World Records regrets to inform that Tomoji Tanabe died at his home in southern Japan on Friday the 19th of June 2009 at the age of 113. Tomoji held the record for oldest living male since 24 January 2007. Tomoji was an inspirational record holder and will be missed by all of us at Guinness World Records.

Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.

Henry Allingham (UK) inherits the title of oldest living man. Henry was born in Clapham, London, on 6 June 1896 and took the British title on 19 January 2007 aged 110 years 227 days. Mr Allingham is also the oldest surviving member of the armed forces, having served in both World Wars.

Tallest man in history

The tallest man in medical history for whom there is irrefutable evidence is Robert Pershing Wadlow. He was born at Alton, Illinois, USA, on February 22, 1918, and when he was last measured on June 27, 1940, was found to be 2.72 m (8 ft 11.1 in) tall.

Wadlow died at 1:30 a.m. on July 15, 1940, in a hotel in Manistee, Michigan, as a result of a septic blister on his right ankle caused by a brace, which had been poorly fitted only a week earlier. He was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Alton, in a coffin measuring 3.28 m (10 ft 9 in) long, 81 cm (32 in) wide and 76 cm (30 in) deep.

Wadlow's greatest recorded weight was 222.71 kg (35 st 1 lb) on his 21st birthday and he weighed 199 kg (31 st 5 lb) at the time of his death. His shoe size was 37AA (47 cm, 18½ in long) and his hands measured 32.4 cm (12¾ in) from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger. He wore a size 25 ring. His arm span was 2.88 m (9 ft 5¾ in) and his peak daily food consumption was 8000 calories.

At the age of nine, he was able to carry his father Harold F. Wadlow, later Mayor of Alton, who stood 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) and weighed 77 kg (170 lb), up the stairs of the family home.
